Solidarity Rally and March for Bradley Manning

June 1, 2013 Hillcrest, San Diego, CA -  Supporters of Bradley Manning took to the streets in solidarity with protesters at Fort Meade and around the world. Manning was arrested in May 2010 in Iraq on suspicion of having passed classified material to the website WikiLeaks. He pleaded guilty in February 2013 to 10 of 22 charges, which could carry a sentence of up to 20 years. The trial on the remaining charges, including aiding the enemy, begins June 3rd.

Bradley Manning 1000 Days of Injustice Protest in Hillcrest

"FREE MANNING"

Saturday, February 23, 2013 San Diego, CA - Over 100 people attended a rally and candlelight vigil in Hillcrest to protest Bradley Manning's 1,000th day in jail without trial. The action was one of over 70 events organized world-wide to demonstrate support for the whistle-blower.

An overpass light brigade sign to "FREE MANNING" was held over route 163 on University Avenue. The diverse crowd moved to the 9th Street intersection for a short rally of speakers.

After a public show of hands, the enthusiastic demonstrators took to the streets. The group managed to walk several blocks before the police swept in. The cops attempted to force the protesters on to the sidewalk with their squad cars but to little avail. The parade of marchers and large banners took up a lot of public space.

The protest march drew plenty of attention from bar patrons. The de facto police escort provided a disco light show to entertain the public at large. At the end of the strip near 2nd the activists reversed course and took the streets again. Everyone made it back to the bridge overpass safely and with no arrests.
